It’s true, out of control ego has overrun the planet. Entitlement is everywhere. Mindless compulsive consumption and the ever-growing ocean of waste it implies is a way of life for the majority of us. It’s bleak stuff. Certainly, egoic selfish emanations of some sort are to blame for that. So indeed, it’s a tremendous problem and we should be striving to get to get ourselves under control.

That said…

It’s a worth while exercise to stop and be honest with ourselves about our egos. None of us are going to live the life of a renunciate any time soon, so we may as well admit the fact that a dash of ego is pretty god damn delicious. Like most delicious things, in moderation it’s fine. Think about it, we allow cheat days in our diets, we take days off from the gym, so why should we act as if we’re engaged in constant war of attrition against our egos when we’re certainly not? Perhaps obtusely bashing the ego is actually more mindless than it is mindful.

The trick then is to strike a balance. If we don’t spice our psychic stew just right, the ego’s overpowering saccharine flavor will corrupt the entire recipe. Of course we’re all working with different ingredients toward different dishes, so it’s up to each of us to season carefully.
